TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Fayette County.

I don’t know how many people actually notice it, but one of the smallest little details in the Fayette Flyer lives down in the weather section: the water temperature. And no, before anyone asks, I am not driving out to Lake Peachtree twice a week with a thermometer and sticking it in the water like some kind of mad scientist.

The number comes from a convenient little website run by the USGS, which stands for the United States Geological Survey. They track all sorts of useful and oddly fascinating things: stream levels, rainfall, water temperature, flow rates, and plenty of other measurements that are probably more exciting to people with an engineering background than the general public.

I bring this up because we are finally inching toward what I would consider swimmable water temperatures. Not “jump in without thinking” warm just yet, but warm enough that the brave among us may soon start pretending it feels fine while their shoulders are still up by their ears.

So consider this your early-season reminder: try on the swimsuit before the first pool invite, make sure the goggles still have both straps, see if the pool floats survived the garage, and maybe check whether the sunscreen expired sometime during the Bush administration. Summer is not fully here yet, but it is starting to knock on the door.

Lemonade Day Expands Youth Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Fayette County

Fayette County’s Lemonade Day program is expanding to help more young people learn the basics of business. Led locally through the Fayette County Chamber’s nonprofit arm, the Fayette Community & Leadership Foundation, the national youth entrepreneurship program teaches students how to earn money, manage it wisely, set goals, make decisions, and give back. This year, elementary-aged students can participate virtually through the My Lemonade Day app, while middle school students can apply for a free, week-long, in-person entrepreneurship camp. The camp is limited to 30 students and will offer hands-on learning and real-world business experience. Local business leaders are also invited to support the program as mentors, speakers, sponsors, or contributors. To get involved, email [email protected].
