Good morning, Fayette County.

Looking at the calendar, I’m genuinely torn on what’s more impressive this week: the packed schedule of community events, or the massive lineup of local government meetings across Fayette County. If you’ve never been to a local meeting before, this is a great week to throw a dart at the list below and drop in. (Though if you live in Tyrone, you can probably skip Woolsey's meeting). The best part is that you don't even have to step up to the mic. You can just grab a seat, listen in, and see what's happening in your own backyard.

Environmental Group Raises Stormwater Concerns at QTS Data Center

Flint Riverkeeper and nearby residents have filed a formal 60-day notice of intent to sue over stormwater runoff from the QTS data center site in Fayetteville. The notice alleges that sediment-heavy water and other pollutants have repeatedly flowed from the property into nearby waterways since construction began in 2023. The concerns center on a stream connected to Sandy Creek near Highway 54 and Veterans Parkway. The notice claims runoff problems have continued despite mitigation efforts and says water samples from affected areas showed unusual characteristics, including bubbling, sludge-like material, and elevated metals. QTS declined to comment on potential litigation. The notice gives the company and contractors 60 days to resolve the matter before a lawsuit may be filed under the Clean Water Act.

Fayetteville Bridge Dedicated to Col. Benjamin Studdard Malcolm

A bridge over Whitewater Creek along Highway 54 in Fayetteville has been dedicated in memory of retired U.S. Army Col. Benjamin Studdard Malcolm. Community members and local officials gathered May 27 for a ceremony organized by Rep. Josh Bonner, with a Georgia Department of Transportation sign now marking the span as the Colonel Ben Malcolm Memorial Bridge. Malcolm, who was born in Monroe in 1928 and died in Fayette County in 2023, served in the Army from 1950 to 1979. His military career included leadership roles at Fort McPherson, Fort Gillem, and Fort Buchanan. He was later inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame. After his military service, Malcolm remained active locally, co-owning Future Wood lumber company in Fayetteville for nearly two decades and writing a book about his wartime experiences in Korea.

CIVIL NEWS

This is a packed Monday-to-Thursday stretch, with ten government meetings plus one town-calendar public museum business meeting. Monday is the busiest day, with four boards or councils meeting across Peachtree City, Tyrone and Woolsey. The day opens at 8:00 AM with Peachtree City’s Recreation Advisory Group, which is set up to gather resident comments and advice on recreation programs and facilities. At 9:00 AM, Tyrone’s Downtown Development Authority meets at Town Hall. The evening then turns to land-use and municipal business: the Peachtree City Planning Commission meets at 6:30 PM at City Hall, where the board helps guide development and makes recommendations on zoning and annexation requests, and the Woolsey Town Council holds its June meeting at 7:00 PM at Town Hall, 113 Hill Ave.

Tuesday stays active, with three meetings on the calendar. First up is the Fayette County Board of Assessors Special Called Meeting at 3:00 PM in Suite 108 of the Stonewall Administrative Complex, where the board is scheduled to review 2026 property values for assessment notices. At 6:30 PM, the Fayette County Recreation Commission meets at the Parks and Recreation Office, 140 West Stonewall Ave., Suite 208. That advisory board reviews recreation programs, facilities, policies and related needs. Also at 6:30 PM, Peachtree City’s Transportation Advisory Group meets at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, 191 McIntosh Trail, with its focus on path-system and transportation-related feedback.

Wednesday has one county meeting: the Fayette County Water Committee meets at 8:30 AM at the Fayette County Administrative Complex, 140 Stonewall Avenue West, Suite 100. The committee advises on the operation, maintenance and development of the Fayette County Water System, so this one is worth watching for water infrastructure and utility planning issues.

Thursday closes the run with county and Tyrone meetings. The Fayette County Board of Commissioners meets at 5:00 PM in the Public Meeting Room at the Fayette County Administrative Complex, 140 Stonewall Avenue West, Suite 100, for its June 11 regular meeting. Tyrone also lists a Tyrone Museum Business Meeting at 6:30 PM at the Tyrone Museum. The town describes it as a Friends of the Tyrone Museum business meeting that is open to the public, so I’d flag it separately from the governing-board meetings. At 7:00 PM, the Tyrone Planning Commission meets at Town Hall, rounding out the week.
