Good morning, Fayette County.

May has a funny kind of energy to it. It is not quite summer yet, but it is definitely not spring in the slow, easy sense anymore. The pollen has settled down, the days are getting longer, and the calendar suddenly looks like it drank three cups of coffee and remembered everything it was supposed to squeeze in before school lets out.

There are end-of-year programs, awards ceremonies, graduations, recitals, field days, sports banquets, final projects, church events, summer signups, neighborhood plans, and somehow six different things that all land on the same Thursday night. It feels a little like the Friday of the school year. Everybody is still working, still sitting in traffic, still packing lunches, still answering emails, still running across town, and still trying to keep the normal routine moving. But mentally, summer is already standing at the door.

The kids can feel it. The teachers can definitely feel it. Parents are trying to keep the wheels on for just a few more weeks. Even the evenings feel different, like they are inviting everyone to linger outside a little longer and take the golf cart around the neighborhood. So if this week feels full, you are not imagining it. May has a way of turning the pace up right before it gives everyone permission to breathe.

THE DIGEST

Fayette Senior Services launches $75,000 transportation campaign

Fayette Senior Services launched its "Every Mile Matters" fundraising campaign Friday in response to federal funding cuts that opened a roughly $90,000 deficit in its transportation program. The nonprofit is asking the community to help close the gap by July 31 with a $75,000 goal. Without it, FSS warned, seniors who depend on subsidized rides could face fees up to five times higher to reach dialysis, medical appointments, and pharmacy pickups. Transportation Coordinator Jeff Wix said many older neighbors will face "impossible choices" between rides and basic necessities. Donations are accepted at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville and 203 McIntosh Trail in Peachtree City, by mail, or by phone at 770-461-0813.

Flat Creek Trail closes Monday for road work

A section of Flat Creek Trail between Highway 54 and Tyrone Road closes today for what Fayette County Public Works describes only as "major road work." Through traffic is barred for the duration of the project, with local-access traffic still permitted. The county did not announce a completion date. The closure arrives two days before a separate resurfacing project begins on Tyrone Road on Wednesday, May 6 together a meaningful detour for anyone moving between Tyrone and the western edge of Fayetteville. Drivers should expect delays in the area and watch for signage.

Brooks dedicates Ruth Woods Way

The Town of Brooks will hold a roadway dedication and community celebration Saturday, May 9, at 9 AM honoring Ruth Eva Von Strobel Woods, a beloved Brooks District School teacher who died in a 1959 car accident. The newly constructed access road into the Liberty Tech development now bears her name, Ruth Woods Way. Mayor Dan Langford has called the dedication a long-overdue recognition of Woods's legacy in the small Fayette County town. The ceremony is free and open to the public. The town is expecting a strong turnout from former students, neighbors, and local officials.
