Good morning, Fayette County.

With school back in session, it is probably a good time to talk about Georgia’s school-zone speed camera laws because a few important rules changed this summer.

The biggest thing to understand is that a camera may issue a citation even when the school-zone lights are not flashing. When the lights are flashing, the reduced school-zone speed limit applies. During the rest of the authorized school day, the camera may enforce the regular posted speed limit. In either case, a citation can be issued only when a driver is traveling more than 10 mph over the applicable limit. The cameras may now operate only on school days, beginning one hour before classes and ending one hour after dismissal.

Another round of changes arrives July 1, 2027. Camera warning signs will need to display approaching vehicles’ speeds and flash whenever the camera is authorized to issue citations. Local governments will also need voter approval before entering into or renewing a camera contract.

So, when passing through a school zone, do not use the flashing lights as your only guide. Check the regular speed-limit sign too. Georgia’s new law is meant to make the system clearer and more accountable, but drivers still need to know which speed limit applies.

A new restaurant called Harvest & Grace is preparing to open this fall at the Town at Trilith in Fayetteville. The all-day cafe will serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, specialty coffee, and Sunday brunch, with a menu centered on seasonal ingredients and dishes made largely from scratch. Plans also include a spacious outdoor patio with shaded seating and accommodations for guests bringing their dogs. Harvest & Grace will add another dining option to Trilith’s growing mix of restaurants, shops, residences, and entertainment venues. The concept is designed to work as both a casual morning coffee stop and a full-service destination later in the day. An exact opening date has not yet been announced, but the restaurant is currently expected to begin welcoming customers sometime this fall.

Fayetteville firefighters have started the city’s annual fire hydrant inspection and maintenance program, with work expected to continue through the end of the year. Crews will move through neighborhoods checking hydrants for proper operation and water flow while also cleaning, lubricating, repainting, and adding reflective markers where needed. The routine work helps ensure hydrants are ready for emergency use and gives the city a chance to identify maintenance problems before they become larger issues. Residents may occasionally notice temporary discoloration in their water after nearby hydrants are tested. That can happen when changes in water flow stir up sediment inside the system. The city says the testing is part of regular maintenance of Fayetteville’s water and fire-protection infrastructure.

Fayette County students turned in some of the strongest Georgia Milestones scores in the state for 2026. Among school districts of similar size, Fayette ranked first in Algebra and U.S. History and third in Biology. Algebra results were especially strong, with 72.3% of students scoring proficient or above compared with 48% statewide. The results give the district another strong academic showing as students begin the new school year. Georgia Milestones testing measures how well students have mastered state standards in core subjects and is used to compare performance across schools and districts. Fayette County Public Schools says the latest scores reflect continued work by students, teachers, and staff across the district.

Tyrone Downtown Development Authority Meeting

What: The authority works on redevelopment, investment and improvement efforts in and around Tyrone’s town center. This is a useful meeting for residents following downtown projects and economic development.

When: Monday, August 10, 2:00 PM
What: The Board of Education meets for a work session to review and discuss school-system business. Work sessions generally give board members additional time to examine issues before they reach a regular business meeting.

Peachtree City Planning Commission Meeting
When: Monday, August 10, 6:30 PM
What: The Planning Commission reviews development and land-use matters and makes recommendations to City Council on zoning and annexation requests. The city has posted an amended agenda for this meeting.

When: Monday, August 10, 7:00 PM

Fayetteville City Council and DDA/Main Street Tourism Board Joint Meeting
When: Tuesday, August 11, 5:30 PM
What: Fayetteville City Council and the Downtown Development Authority/Main Street Tourism Board will meet jointly for training. A quorum of both boards is expected, but this is a training session rather than a regular business meeting.

What: Scud Runner is an after-dinner speakeasy experience held among the historic World War II aircraft at CAF Airbase Georgia. The evening will include live blues from Cannonball Red & The Head Hunters, candlelit tables and curated tastings from Georgia wineries and distilleries. Guests will enter through a hidden entrance, and representatives from the participating beverage makers will be available to discuss the selections.
