TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Fayette County. I hope your December is filled with holiday cheer as we get closer to Christmas. I want to share a recent, scary experience: my own dog suffered a sudden medical emergency over the weekend. When his regular vet was closed, I ended up rushing him to an Atlanta hospital before being redirected all the way to the impressive UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Athens. Thankfully, the specialized team there successfully removed a twisted spleen, saving his life. That terrifying drive in the middle of the night made me think: Do you have a plan? This week, I urge every pet owner to take a moment to research and create their own emergency options. My weekend experience revealed that not every emergency veterinary hospital possesses the same specialized equipment or surgical capabilities needed for complex procedures. Knowing exactly where to go in a time of crisis could save your furry family member's life.

THE DIGEST
Patriots to the Benz
This week, all eyes in Fayette County are fixed on the gridiron as the Sandy Creek Patriots football team prepares for a trip to the State Championships! The Patriots delivered a thrilling victory in the semi-finals to punch their ticket to the ultimate stage: Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This incredible run showcases the talent and dedication of our local athletes and coaching staff. They will face Jefferson for the GHSA Class 3A State Championship on Wednesday, December 17th, at 4:15 PM at Mercedes-Benz Stadium; you can watch the game live on Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) or stream it via the NFHS Network.
Girls Flag Football Plays for State Title
It's a huge week for local athletics as the Whitewater High School Girls Flag Football team clinched a berth in the GHSA Division 3 State Championship! The Wildcats earned their trip to Atlanta by showcasing a dominant defense in the semifinals, including a crucial 6-0 victory to secure their spot. The Girls Flag Football team will face North Oconee on Tuesday, December 16th, at 10:00 AM at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Be sure to tune into GPB or head up to the stadium to support our incredible local athletes as they aim to bring the state title back to Fayette County!
New Alcohol Rules for Tyrone Performance Venues
In a tight 3-2 vote, the Tyrone Town Council passed an amendment allowing Performance and Event Venues to serve alcohol, a move designed to support local businesses without creating new "nightclubs." The new ordinance replaces the old requirement that venues make 55% of their revenue from food, a nearly impossible hurdle for theaters, with a new rule requiring 55% of revenue come from ticket sales or venue rentals. To address concerns about noise and nightlife, the Council added strict guardrails: "bar-only" service and walk-ins are banned, and alcohol service at performance venues is restricted to a window of one hour before and after a ticketed show.
Planning a DIY renovation next year? The paperwork just changed.
Starting January 1, 2026, Fayette County homeowners planning to act as their own general contractors will face a new requirement before breaking ground. The Department of Building Safety announced that all homeowner-contractor permit applications must now include a specific Homeowner Contractor Affidavit. This document confirms you are building on your own property, hiring licensed subcontractors for regulated trades, and—most importantly—do not intend to sell or rent the structure for at least 24 months. Applications submitted without this affidavit will not be reviewed. It’s a move designed to ensure safety and compliance with state law, so if you have a project on the horizon, grab the form at fayettecountyga.gov/buildingpermits before heading to the permit office.
