TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Fayette County.

I hope you got to enjoy some of the mild weather this weekend. I've been watching the Winter Olympics some this week. The Winter Games are particularly exotic when you grow up in the South. I've never experienced most of these sports myself. That got me curious: are any fellow Georgians competing for Team USA in Milan?

Turns out, yes! Elana Meyers Taylor, a bobsled pilot from Douglasville, is the sole athlete representing Georgia on Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. She's competing in her fifth consecutive Games, making her one of just seven athletes on this year's Team USA roster to hit that milestone. She's already earned five Olympic medals, three silver and two bronze.

Her backstory has a great Georgia connection, too. She watched softball's Olympic debut when the Games were held in Atlanta in 1996, and her earliest memory of the Olympics is holding the torch as an 11-year-old girl. She'll compete in both the monobob and two-woman bobsled events, with bobsled competition kicking off February 12. At 41, this could be her last shot at the elusive gold medal, the one thing missing from an incredible résumé.

Shovels Turned for Fayette Piedmont Hospital

Piedmont Fayette Hospital broke ground on a $275 million expansion project that will add a new patient tower to the Fayetteville campus. Today it has 310 beds, more than 2,300 employees, performs over 13,000 surgeries per year, and handles 130,000 outpatient encounters annually. When fully built out, the expansion will support up to 500 acute care beds. The new tower is central to advancing the hospital's medical and surgical programs as Fayette County continues to grow. Construction is expected to be completed in just over two years.
