TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Fayette County. It is still very much winter with no sign of warmth anytime soon. We are officially in the thick of it. One thing I'm thankful for so far this season: I haven't had to scrape ice off my truck's windshield yet or sit there awkwardly waiting for the defroster to kick in. Small victories.

If you've been with us since the beginning (we just started back in December 2025), you may have noticed I don't touch politics. In this day and age, we're absolutely hammered with political opinions and there's no shortage of it. I want to keep things fun, snappy, and objective. Short and sweet for your benefit. When it comes to local government coverage, my goal is simply to inform you of what's happening, not to tell you what to think. That's ultimately up to you, and I know the people of Fayette County are smart enough to make your own decisions.

THE DIGEST

Fayetteville Planning Commission Rejects Data Center Proposals

About 100 Fayetteville residents turned out Tuesday night to oppose data center development, and the Planning and Zoning Commission listened. The commission denied two Highway 85 North proposals tied to data center concerns during its January 27 meeting.

Corvus Investment Group had requested Business Park zoning for a 240-acre site near Highway 314, which would have allowed data centers as a permitted use. The commission rejected that request and approved Light Industrial zoning instead, which permits warehouses but not data centers. City Council will make the final decision.

On a separate parcel, CHI/Acquisitions presented plans for a data center on land already zoned for such use. Every public speaker opposed the project. Commissioner Chris Key moved to deny the conceptual plan, and the motion passed. The developer can appeal to City Council within 10 days.

Fayetteville seeks artists for downtown bench beautification project

The City of Fayetteville is calling on artists to design a public bench for placement near Courthouse Square. Selected artists will create an original, family-friendly design that reflects the spirit of the community using weather-resistant outdoor materials. Applications must include a concept description, cost quote, qualifications, and project timeline. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 6, 2026. Interested artists can visit fayetteville-ga.gov to access the application and learn more about the downtown beautification initiative.

Fayetteville's Railroad Street Historic District added to National Register

Fayetteville's Railroad Street Historic District has officially earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. City Planner Nicole Gilbert prepared the nomination materials over several years, documenting 23 contributing buildings constructed between 1893 and 1965 along North Jeff Davis Drive. The district represents one of Fayetteville's earliest and best-preserved residential areas, featuring New South, Georgian, and gabled-wing cottages with Victorian and Craftsman architectural elements. Property owners within the district now qualify for tax credits and preservation incentives.
