Good morning, Fayette County.

This weekend is shaping up to be one of those classic May weekends where everything seems to be happening at once. But before we get to the fun stuff, here is one thing worth knowing if your weekend plans take you anywhere near Atlanta: the Georgia Department of Transportation is closing all lanes on the west side of I-285 between Cascade Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. And when they say all lanes, they mean all lanes. The closure begins Friday at 7 p.m. and is expected to last until 5 a.m. Monday while crews repair aging pavement, concrete slabs, medians, and shoulders.

In plain English, that means Atlanta traffic is going to be a nightmare this weekend. If your Mother’s Day plans involve going into Atlanta, give yourself plenty of extra time and consider taking back roads.

The good news? You do not have to go far to find something to do. Fayette County has a full weekend of events, markets, and music happening right here at home. So maybe this is the weekend to stay local, celebrate Mom, and let I-285 be somebody else’s problem.

New Development Breaks Ground in Fayetteville

Piedmont Cancer Institute broke ground Tuesday, May 5, on a new Fayetteville facility that will anchor the planned Cornerstone West development at Highway 54 and Veterans Parkway. The 60,000-square-foot medical office building, located at 1347 Veterans Parkway across from QTS and near Trilith, will be shared by Piedmont Cancer Institute and Digestive Healthcare of Georgia. The project is being developed by SouthTree and designed by Jefferson Brown. For Piedmont Cancer Institute, the move is meant to bring more space, easier parking, and better access for patients, while keeping care close to Piedmont Fayette Hospital. The practice currently operates across multiple areas of the hospital campus, where parking and navigation have become difficult for some patients, especially amid ongoing construction. The building is the first phase of SouthTree’s larger 28-acre Cornerstone West development, which is expected to include medical offices, active adult housing, retail space, and a hotel over the next two years.

Fayette Forward Outlines Countywide Path Plan

Fayette Forward recently shared details on “Connect Fayette,” a proposed countywide path plan aimed at expanding and linking Fayette County’s existing trail and golf cart path network. Fayette County has about 15,000 golf carts and roughly 140 miles of existing paths, most of them in Peachtree City. The proposal looks at ways to better connect Fayetteville, Tyrone, Peachtree City, and unincorporated parts of the county through a more coordinated system. The paths would generally be 10 to 12 feet wide to meet state and federal standards and support multiple uses, with designs that could include roadside paths, nature paths, and residential connections. Fayetteville to Receive $92K for Opioid Detection System

Fayetteville is set to receive $92,000 in federal funding to purchase a new opioid detection system for local public safety operations. The equipment is intended to help law enforcement and first responders identify dangerous illegal substances more quickly, including fentanyl. City officials plan to use the funding to strengthen Fayetteville’s ability to intercept illegal substances and better protect first responders who may encounter them during investigations or emergency calls. The money is part of the federal fiscal year 2026 budget and was directed toward local projects through Congressionally Directed Spending, a process used to support specific community needs such as public safety, infrastructure, and local services.

Trilith Foundation’s New Book Asks a Simple Question: What Does It Mean to Truly Thrive?

Fayette County’s own Trilith Foundation has released Human Flourishing: A Field Guide — Be Well, Do Good, Together. A new book built around a question that sounds simple until you actually sit with it:

What does it mean to truly thrive?

The new guide is connected to the Global Flourishing Study, a five-year international survey of more than 200,000 people across 22 countries. The research was conducted by Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program, Baylor University’s Institute for Global Human Flourishing, Gallup, and the Center for Open Science.

But the book itself is not written like a research paper. That is the point. Trilith Foundation’s goal was to take a huge body of research and shape it into a guide people could use around a table, in a small group, with a journal, or during honest conversations with people they trust.

1. Flourishing is more than doing fine

The study looks beyond the usual ways people measure a good life. It considers physical and mental health, relationships, character, purpose, and financial security.

That broader view matters because “doing well” on paper does not always mean someone is actually flourishing. A person can be successful and lonely. Comfortable and aimless. Busy and disconnected. The guide pushes readers to think about the whole picture instead of reducing life to one scorecard.

That is also where the research gets interesting. Money matters, of course, but it is not the whole story. Some places with less material wealth showed strength in areas like relationships, meaning, and character, while wealthier countries did not automatically rise to the top when all parts of flourishing were considered together.

2. The book is meant to be worked through, not skimmed

The field guide is organized as a five-week experience, with readings, reflection prompts, discussion questions, journaling space, full-color illustrations, photography, and companion videos. PRNewswire notes that the companion video series includes Dr. Tyler J. VanderWeele, one of the principal architects of the Global Flourishing Study, along with artists and writers including Daniel Bashta, Katherine Wolf, and Sho Baraka.

That format tells you something about the book. It is not trying to be a coffee-table object or a one-night read. It is built for people to slow down, talk things through, and apply the ideas to ordinary life.

The guide also blends research, ancient wisdom, and real human stories, which gives it a different feel than a typical self-improvement book. It is not just asking, “How can I feel better?” It is asking, “How do I live in a way that helps me and the people around me flourish?”

3. The most surprising idea may be “artisanal”

One of the more interesting parts of the guide is its use of the word “artisanal.”

At first, that sounds like it belongs to painters, woodworkers, potters, or somebody selling handmade candles at a farmers market. But the idea is much bigger than that. Flourishing involves making, creating, solving, building, repairing, imagining, and contributing.

In other words, people are not just made to consume life. They are made to shape something meaningful.

That could mean art, but it could also mean raising children, building a business, fixing a problem at work, organizing a community effort, mentoring someone younger, planting a garden, writing a song, cooking for neighbors, or helping create a better place to live. The point is not that everyone needs to become an artist. The point is that part of living well is using what you have been given to make something good. Art-Is-In-All.

4. The bigger message is communal

The book’s subtitle, Be Well, Do Good, Together, gives away the heart of the project. Flourishing is not presented as a private achievement or a luxury reserved for people with perfect circumstances. The Foundation frames it as something people are invited into during every season of life.

That may be the most useful part of the guide. It takes something that can sound soft or inspirational and connects it to research, practice, and community. Nobody does not want to live well. The harder question is whether we are willing to build the habits, relationships, and communities that make living well more possible.
